What Michael Scott Accidentally Taught Me About Branding

While watching a rerun of The Office last night,

I realized Michael Scott accidentally nailed one of the biggest truths about branding.

(No, seriously.)

Cue me sitting there with my tea, laughing way too hard, and also lowkey having a marketing epiphany.

Here’s the scene:

Michael’s trying to explain why he’s good at sales.

He says something like,

"I’m not superstitious... but I am a little stitious."

and

"People buy paper from me because they like me."

Total classic Michael, right?

But here’s the thing: He's not wrong.

At the end of the day, people don't just buy because of your product.

They buy because of you.

Because they like you.

Because they trust you.

Because they feel something when they engage with you — whether it's humor, inspiration, comfort, excitement, or even nostalgia.

That’s branding.

Branding isn’t just colors and fonts.

It’s how you make people feel.

It’s the inside jokes. The familiar tone. The emotional connection.

It’s your personality coming through — consistently — until people associate you with a specific feeling they want to have again.

And here’s the secret most small businesses miss:

You don’t have to be the loudest.

You don’t have to be the fanciest.

You just have to be memorable in a way that feels real.

Think about it:

Your favorite creators online? You feel like you know them.

Your go-to brands? You trust them without even thinking about it.

Your loyal clients? They come back not just for the service — but for you.

It’s not about being perfect.

It’s about being consistent and human.

Sis, if you’re struggling with your marketing feeling stiff, random, or exhausting — it might be because you’re trying to build a brand without actually showing you.

And you don’t have to keep doing that.

It’s all about showing up real, building emotional connections, and yes — letting a little bit of your own "Michael Scott charm" come through. 😉
